The Daily Grind
In
a blog a couple days ago Yuri mentioned "Old Man Drew". Being the
second-oldest member of the Break A Leg family, I definitely sometimes
find myself on the back end of some surprising generational gaps. Though I'm still young and spry, I'm no spring chicken (the older you get the more cliches accumulate in your brain, like random screws and bolts in a junk drawer), and lately I've noticed my outlook on the world changing. It's a slow process, one that happens so gradually that you have no hope of noticing; and even if you did you would have about as much luck stopping the tide from rolling in as you would stopping your brain from crotchetizing. It's not just your brain of course, it's your body too. A wise man once said "It's not the years honey, it's the mileage." That's the chief reason I refuse to work out: why put your body through so much stress? It's unnatural. Let's explore some of the changes, minor and major, that have accumulated in me over the last decade or so.
So tell me something: why is it that I don't like modern bands but I like modern movies? Why is The Dark Knight one of my favorite films of all time but I think Maroon 5 is a bunch of pussies? Is it simply because Maroon 5 is a bunch of pussies? Don't you want to punch that lead singer? Mary Kate Olsen has 8 pounds on that twig. But all the modern bands can't be pussies, can they? Or can they? I don't know; liking new movies and hating new music is just one of those aging anomalies I'll have to take to my grave. I've accumulated a certain amount of wisdom as well over the years, but it becomes truer and truer that wisdom is knowing what you don't know. So basically the wiser you get the less you realize you know, even though you're accumulating more and more knowledge. You also basically don't give a shit about as much anymore, which is very refreshing, since caring about a bunch of random meaningless crap is a real drain on mental resources. Perspective is what you might call that last one, and perspective is my favorite effect of aging. So even though I'm only... how old I am, the feeling that time is passing is already beginning to wear away at my subconscious. It's not like I'm constantly thinking about it, but it's like I think just a tiny bit more about it every day than I did the day before, you know? That single gray hair surfing at the front of my do doesn't help much, either. I blame that one squarely on Ronin. Kids will do that to you. |

Ah, youth. Wait anouther twenty then tell me someting I don't know.
You're actually wrong about being the second oldest, Drew. I believe you are, in fact, the fourth oldest. Duane, Skip and Daniel are all older than you, kid.
Forgot about Duane... sorry Duane!
Daniel, hmmmm. Guess I forgot about him too.
Wait... who's Skip?
I think one reason new movies are better and new music isn't oftentimes is that the new technology has had slightly different effects on the two mediums.
I think actually there are alot more bad scripts nowadays because you can sell tickets with big sp fx, so I wouldn't completely agree...however there are still alot of good movies being made every day...or every month maybe.
Music however, and more specifically musicians and producers have probably been hindered by all the cool effects you can put, very easily(or at least it feels that way, relatively) I can make a bad recording and a shoddy performance of mine sound kind of cool if I put enough reverb and effects on it...and you may notice that this isn't just me...The killers albums sound very clean, but every time I've seen video recordings of their live albums, and friends have seen them live they've said they've been either "Really dissapointing" or just plain sucked. I don't especially like their albums either...
Drew, there is actually alot of great music being done nowadays...its just not as marketable because people have shoddy musical taste and mostly want music that is an equivalent to comfort food-----
Oh god...end rant...sorry...sorry I just realized how long I went
I can always tell it's your comment, by the fact that the body of the text doesn't fit on the same screen as the name of the author down at the bottom.
I think what it really comes down to is that movies are far easier to stay current with than music.
There's more marketing behind movies, there are fewer produced in any given time frame, and have relatively limited distribution outlets (movie theater, then DVD, then TV, rarely if ever overlapping) versus music (brick-and-mortar, iTunes/emusic/other subscription service, illegal downloads, radio play, satellite play; all of which release at roughly the exact same time).
Any given movie is released in serial across multiple formats. Music is released in parallel.
It just takes more processing in your head and time in the day to give a rat's ass about new music this and that.
With no conscious effort whatsoever I can tell you upcoming movie releases, whereas I have no clue what's going on in music. At. All.
what about Radiohead? can you honestly say you don't like Radiohead? or did they start producing music more than 10 years ago? jeez, i'm so young...
Dark Knight is now one of my favorite movies of all time as well, the IMAX was absurdly cool...
