Boards > General Filmmaking Discussion Thread

YOU GUYS.
I think that a few of your viewers are aspiring filmmakers, so this can be a general not-exactly-asking-questions-just-discussing place.

I'm really stoked, because I started interning with some indie filmmakers, and we're making an internet fantasy show for little kids.
It's not the best thing ever, but it's going to be really cute.
I'm working with pretty much the same equipment that you guys use... it's an amazing experience.
We were out shooting for fourteen hours last weekend.
And we were SO exhausted by the end, but in a really good way.
I am so glad that I've had some filmmaking experience with professionals.
Before I just thought I wanted to be a director, but now that I've done some actual shoots and stuff, I KNOW it.
I'm really impatient for the next shoot.
I am so happy. =]
I wish I could talk about it more, but I signed a non-disclaimer form.

Wait, fourteen hours on SUNDAY.
Twelve hours on Saturday.
So twenty six hours altogether.
Cool.

Hahah, for some reason I read that quickly and it looked like "Tweny six hours and an alligator" to which I thought, CAG?!?

That's awesome though, love to hear that you're out making stuff.

Those killer days are the best, They're insanely intense, but when it's something you love doing it's so freakin satisfying.

Be sure to let us know how things progress, wanna see the end result.

Hey, Robb....I have no idea where else to post this question...I watched every episode of Life from the Inside and chortled at every one, but this has nothing to do with that. I just thought I'd plug another awesome show beside BaL.

No, my questions is this: what program(s) do you make to compose/create/produce/expel your music. I have a few tunes I'd like to get out of my head and into other people's ear, and Acid Pro 6. I can't play any instruments, but my acapella work is better than my spelling of acapella. My songs are no "Amber Turnipseed" but I'm not Biz Markee either (that was an insult).

Long post short: what do you use to make your magic?

I'm lighting some scenes at night in a forest and I was wondering if hiding blue lights at the top or bottum of trees while lighting the characters with a different light would look nice. I'm also curious about the Sony HVR-AU1 HDV camcorder... will it get nice images in the dark?

Huh, that link isn't working for me for some reason.

Well, for pretty much all of our outside scenes (such as the latest convo "revolution") we've used a combination of blue gels and orange gels, this is mainly because of the moonlight/streetlight combo we're going for. We think it looks great, ends up looking really slick on screen, however if you're doing a forest scene, you might want to stick to just the blue, since the light would be coming from just the moon, unless there are other diegetic light sources present? Really depends on what effect you're going for, but getting the proper lighting is always key, and sounds like you're on the right track, shining some lights with blue gels through the trees will get a nice look, just if you're going for it being a normal night in the forest, be sure not to light it too strongly, don't want it looking like you're in the middle of a studio. Diffusion is the way to go.

Hey, Jennifer!

Man, I can't believe that I missed this one! I need to read the boards more closely!

First, let me say "thanks!" I'm so glad you like our show!

Now, to answer your question: I use Logic Pro 7 (until I upgrade to 8). I've never used Acid Pro. But I've heard good things about it. If you're just looking to get the tunes out of your head, I'm sure that'll be MORE (MORE) than adequate. All you need is a sequencer anyway and that's what Acid Pro (and Logic) basically are.

My recording setup is really simple. In fact, if you've seen the show, you've seen where I record. On my Mac. I use a very cheap USB preamp for my crappy mic (both of those things are about to be replaced...very soon! I'm excited). But you can probably use the mic that came with your computer.(?) As long as it's not built in. You'd be amazed at how well those little external mics can work if used creatively (I made an entire album with one).

And with Acid Pro you'll probably be able to clean stuff up as well and make it sound extra pretty.

That said, if you're looking to drop a largish wad of cash on software, I STRONGLY recommend Logic Pro. But it sounds like you're doing fine for now!

And I want to hear your music when it's done!

Thanks, Robb. Just check out my Mlog to witness my first creation. It's rough, but it gets the point across. I'll probably do a less cartoony version later, but I was playing around with pitch levels and that came out and I just started laughing and though "Ok, I have completed my life's work. Everything else is just something to do till I die."

Hello filmmakers, and all the hard working crews of the entertainment world! My name is Phil Guye and I am collaborating with a few close peers of mine to put together a production book that strictly addresses all facets of shooting on a green screen. Now, being a former producer myself, I have extensive knowledge on how to shoot on a green screen, trouble shoot in production and how to handle particular effects in post. The crew that I am working with also have plenty of experience (over 15 years of experience), but we are looking to broaden our knowledge to make a more sound and sharp book. We are touching out to the entertainment industry professionals to try and gather additional advice of past experiences to better help finesse our collection within the book. Now, we are not looking for charity, we will pay your for your time and written advise, but let me better clarify what we are looking for too. You will be compensated for your articles and tips, but we are only looking for those who have serious experience in the subject matter, and those who can properly dictate articles that are properly formatted and grammatically correct. See this link here for a basic example of the type of written work we are looking for " Green Screen " We are looking to get these articles in as soon as we possible, so if you have any questions at all, please call our office line at 323-851-3825 or email me direct phillipguye@hotmail.com Again, this is not charity, and you will be properly compensated for your time and sited in the completion of the book. Don't be shy! Please call, we are not fake, we are real hard working people looking to make a solid book to better help other filmmakers in their future endeavors.
Thanks,
Phil
